This Gaiwan is handmade of fine Jingdezhen porcelain, but it is also finished with a special dark red glaze known as Jihong 霁红 with a hand painted blue-and-white pattern. The firing temperature has to be strictly maintained at 1280°C. This product is very difficult to make and thus has a high scrap rate. Jihong is a glaze color that can only be fired successfully within a narrow range of temperature (around 1280°C to 1300°C). In order to fire Blue-and-White and red at the same time successfully, the temperature needs to be strictly controlled, at the same time the formulae of the glaze and body need to be adjusted accordingly. Thanks to the artist, we are able to have these two classic forms in one set of gaiwan.
