This teapot is handmade of fine Jingdezhen porcelain, but it is also finished with a special dark red glaze known as Jihong 霁红. Jihong glazed porcelain is one form of traditional Jingdezhen ceramic originating in the Ming Dynasty that was revived during the Qing Dynasty. The glaze is very difficult to fire properly and has a very high scrap rate when producing compared to other glazes. The dark red glaze is strongly affected by temperature and flame during firing. The conditions must be exactly right to produce the signature rich and deep dark red glaze found in true Jihong porcelain. This technique is known as fanggu, since it follows the original ancient methods and materials as closely as possible.
