The painting features a chicken motif and the characters are from a poem about the painting "Paint a Rooster" by the Ming Dynasty painter, Tang Yin. The characters describe how it is not easy to make a sound, but once it is voiced out, thousands of households open their doors.
As each piece is handmade and hand painted, the details of the painting may vary slightly from piece to piece.
This gaiwan was handmade and features a hand painted flower motif in qinghua (cobalt blue) and Youlihong (red) underglaze. This kind of porcelain is known as fanggu porcelain because it aims to revive and reproduce an ancient style of porcelain. Fanggu technique is more costly and difficult to execute properly than modern styles of porcelain.
