The photos show a cup with admirable proportions and soft, sensuous curves. In the hand, the cup is small, dense, and surprisingly thick-walled, especially right above the foot. At first I thought this was a compromise between the invention of appealing shapes and the harsh conditions of the Ruyao kiln. In fact, the design works extremely well for drinking tea. The thick stoneware conserves heat, the rim is comfortably held in one hand, and the two-tiered design provides a ledge for sipping the tea and a cool gripping surface for the fingers and thumb. The glaze, with its quartz-like texture and appearance, is as stunning as the description suggests.
