This ruyao glaze is known as "moon white" 月白 yuebai for its pale milky translucent color. This piece is handmade by Master Lee ShanMing 李善明 of Shan Kiln studio in Jingdezhen China.

Shan Kiln ruyao has a glow and a depth that are a result of the ruyao glaze recipes of the studio. When firing the pottery, and as the body expands, crazing appears on the surface of the glaze. These 开片 or "opening cracks," are found on all ruyao and will expand on the glaze with use. They give each piece its unique character.

Beautiful example of the genre

Where do I start? With the lovely glow of this “moon white” ruyao glaze? That the natural crazing of the glaze makes it a work of art you can truly call your own? Or with the fact that this is from Shan kiln, so you *know* exactly the level of craftsmanship you’re getting? One can start with any of these, but the finish will always be the same: the proof of the teaware is ultimately in the tea, and this little gaiwan makes excellent tea!
