This gaiwan was handmade of porcelain and features a hand painted dragon motif in qinghua blue. This kind of porcelain is known as "fanggu" porcelain because it aims to revive and reproduce an ancient style of porcelain. Fanggu technique is more costly and difficult to execute properly than modern styles of porcelain.

Elegant and practical

This beautiful gaiwan has a great tactile quality that makes it a pleasure to handle. The fine porcelain is translucent when held up to the light, while the decoration is bold and very skilfully painted. Each gaiwan is unique, with some variation in the density of the cobalt blue (compared to the vessel in the first illustration) but still beautifully painted throughout. It was worth the cost.
