This Gaiwan is handmade of fine Jingdezhen porcelain, and is also finished with a special dark red glaze known as Jihong 霁红 with a hand painted qinghua (blue) landscape inside the bowl.
The studio follows the traditional recipe for the glaze. The firing temperature has to be strictly maintained at 1280°C. This product is very difficult to make and thus has a high scrap rate. Jihong is a glaze color that can only be fired successfully within a narrow range of temperature (around 1280°C to 1300°C). Slight changes in temperature and atmosphere can destroy an entire batch. The batch just prior to this one failed in the kiln.
