This gaiwan is handmade of fine Jingdezhen porcelain, and is finished with a red glaze known as Langhong 郎红 "Lang Red."

Langhong is a copper red glaze originating during the Qing Dynasty, and was named for the head official in charge of royal ceramics, Lang Tingji 郎廷极。Lang Tingji inadvertently created langhong while trying to revive the earlier glaze recipe for Jihong, another copper red glaze originating in the earlier Ming Dynasty.

Langhong is a red glaze that becomes less viscous than jihong as it reaches its high firing temperature, causing the glaze to be pulled down by gravity. The result is a transition in the appearance of the glaze from a white, transparent rim at the top of the cup to a very dark rich red towards the base.
